Lorenz Widauer is among the most outstanding representatives of Austria’s younger generation of musicians. As a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, he moves confidently between improvised, contemporary, and transcultural music, developing a distinctive artistic voice.
By the age of 27, Widauer had already toured internationally, both as a bandleader and as a sideman. His collaborations include Christian Muthspiel’s Orjazztra Vienna, Shake Stew, Yvonne Moriel’s sweetlife:quartet, as well as his own ensemble Chez Fría, a contemporary, transdisciplinary project commissioned by the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festival. From 2021 to 2024, Widauer served as principal trumpet in the acclaimed production Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival.
In November 2025, Widauer released the album Until We Meet Again together with Iranian oud player and singer Avin Ahmadi, which critics described as “a finely balanced dialogue in which lines, motifs, and impulses flow effortlessly into one another.” Following many years of collaboration with German guitarist Philipp Schiepek, their debut album Bangers & Ballads is currently in production and scheduled for release in the first half of 2026.
Widauer is a recipient of the Hubert von Goisern Cultural Award and a winner of the ARTEDEA competition. He has collaborated with Miguel Zenón, Linda May Han Oh, Immanuel Wilkins, Kris Davis, Becca Stevens, and Guillermo Klein. In autumn 2024, he was selected as trumpeter for Focusyear Band 25, a prestigious international program at the Basel Academy of Music under the direction of Wolfgang Muthspiel.
